Intro to SDI

Introduction

Founded in 2012, Service Design Institution, Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University (SDI) is devoted to establishing the professional field of service design, to advertising the importance of design, to exploring the innovative mode in public service and commercial design, and to constructing an international Internet platform for design education and researches based on international cooperation and research-sharing.


Positioning

To meet this country’s demands of developing new service industries, SDI conducts forward-looking researches about smart city in a number of fields, including product development, service design, start-up incubator, and social innovation. Based on the advantages of integrated disciplines of Tsinghua University, SDI focuses on the application of new technologies and new modes in the service area. It not only provides integrated solutions of service design via projects that combine international and local resources, but also converts its researches into real-world powerhouse. As an internationally influential innovation platform, the Institute cooperates with famous international design companies, colleges and research institutes to cultivate high-quality talents in service design in the aspect of its education and promotion.

What is Service Design?

Targeted at the service economy in the information society, service design is the study of theories concerning how interactive design extends to service innovation and provides trans-disciplinary solutions to complicated design problems in the IT service sectors including e-commerce, e-learning, e-healthcare, and e-government.


Based on the core idea of user-centeredness, service design combines design mindset, community service, and business innovation. Comprehensively taking into account the appeals of stakeholders, it coordinates the relationship among corporations, citizens and the government, creates virtual service experience based on the user context, and establishes value and new business bode alongside.


Methodology

SDI conducts project practices, service design, and innovative talents cultivation according to the methodology in design studies. We are devoted to promoting zero-distance dialogues among stakeholders, design team members, clients, and users via user-centered data research, comprehensive analysis, communication, discussion, and design philosophy. By putting themselves in the shoes of other people, designers can better understand their ideas and thus design the works closer to the requirements.

Design Thinking

As a people-oriented designing spirit and method, design thinking, in fact the core methodology of SDI, considers not only the needs and behaviors of people, but also the feasibility of technology and business. It seeks creative solutions to various challenges and problems and puts forward new possibilities from the perspective of people’s demand.

  • Empathy

    Understand users via various ways (including visits, field investigations, experiencing, questionnaires, etc.). It helps design thinkers to think from the perspective of users, so as to identify their real itches and demands.


  • Define

    Sort out information from the last step, provide a deeper definition of the problem, and dig out the users’ demand.


  • Ideate

    Think of different solutions during the process of brainstorming to solve the problems in the “Define” step.


  • Prototype

    As a hands-on thinking process, it serves as a communication tool among the team or with users via concrete presentation. Along with making, thinking will be crystallized.

  • Test

    Communicate with users with the prototype made in the last step. The scenario simulation allows users to test its suitability, and we can improve our solution and better understand our users by observing the situation and their responses.
