2017 Tsinghua-Santander World Challenges of 21st Century Program, sponsored by Tsinghua University and Banco Santander, is an international interdisciplinary innovation competition and workshop that brings together young people who aspire to make real impacts on truly important issues that we are facing today. Themed with“ Innovation makes the world better ‒ urban sustainability”, the 2017 Competition encouraged teams to address topics in areas such as urban life, education, environmental protection, energy, health, and sustainable development with innovative products and services prototypes,combined with open source technology and innovative development needs.


After submission of the innovative solution and selection of the finalists,10 teams in total from China, India, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands,Singapore, were invited to the two-week workshop in Tsinghua University to turn their ideas into reality. The students gained a lot from lecturing, visiting and practicing activities.


August 11st was the biggest day of TSWC 2017, after series of lectures, workshops as well as enterprise visitings, the students improved their formal ideas and successfully made their own model. Each group presented their excellent ideas and gained lots of applause from other students, teachers and judges.



FIRST PRIZE

Jansen Chair

According to that the wheelchair is difficult to climb stairsor walk on the rugged road , Jansen Chair devised this kind of wheelchair which can walk on the bumpy road. This kind of wheelchair is different from the other wheelchairs because they used three alternant mechanical legs to replace the traditional wheel , and the price of the wheelchair is less expensive than the other wheelchairs that can climb stairs or walk on the rugged road so it can be used in the society widely. Jansen Chair showed a video to simulate how this wheelchair works, and how the app can help people to use the wheelchair. After that, they displayed their business plan about how to sale the wheelchair and how to run the company.

The unique point about this wheelchair is that it can walk on the grass or gravel road easily and safely, and Jansen Chair will set lots of retail stores to repair the broken wheelchair.

  

SECOND PRIZE

Marble us

In Netherland, Internet is not for everyone, and social contact is becoming a big problem to the whole society, so Marbleus designed a social round electronic table that called EVA in terms of this issue.

They played a mini drama to show how EVA works. At first, a old woman that do not know EVA came to the table and EVA helped her to find a solution of boredom. And then, a man that has already know EVA came to the table and tried to find a person to play cards with him. Marbleus showed how EVA talk to human and the programme that are simplified.

 

THIRD PRIZE

HB^2

HB2 focused on the environmental awareness of Chinese express delivery. In China, express delivery use lots of carton box as packages of express, and it causes many problems that are not environmental-friendly or efficiency, so they devised a system called “environmentally return bag”. They used a kind of strong cloth to make a bag as packages of expressto reduce the wastage of the carton box. And then, HB2 showed the video about their “environmentally return bag ”. In the video, HB2 displayed the whole steps of “environmentally return bag ” and the problems of express at now.

At last, they scanned the QR code on the bag and showed the AR animation that is a tree grow up in the animation.


SPECIAL PRIZE

Bilbo

Nowadays, many students who are nerds or geeks in university are facing the problem that is bullied by others so that they cannot focus on academy, and teachers cannot notice their emotions moment by moment, so Bilbo programme this platform that can catch every facial expression of every student. And then, they used this platform and showed to audience how it works. Maybe in different areas , there are some different  cultures , but the face structures of people are same.

For the business part, they said the most of income will come from the rent of university and they will take rent monthly .

 

4KARE

4 Kare tries to solve one of the major problems related to human health. Knee Joint pain remains one of the major issues to be solved in current Bio-science. Their product is completely a pure mechanical structure designed to reduce the load on kneejoint. The main purpose is that it will transfer partial amount of force from the upper leg i.e. thigh to the lower leg i.e. shin through an external structure mounted on leg. They showed the judges their 3D printing model and their emphasis on the user experience and the cost showed their comprehensive consideration.

 

Food for thought

Food for thought pays attention to the big impact of food production and transport. They designed an APP which makes it able for people to keep track of their foodprint by scaning the code on the food. In the presentation, they brought their exquisite three-dimensional spiral model with five different colours each one presents an ingredient of food. The judges were impressed by their colours and innovation, as well as commenting their business model.

 

Bot.e

Bot.e showed pictures of garbages and the harm of rubbishes to the earth first and told others how serious white pollution are. They showed their product———recycling bins of plastic bottle and an app to repay you back the money of the bottle to reward people throw the bottle in the bins. And the income will come from the advertisement of side face of the recycling bins.


HopeMX

HopeMX pays attention to the sudden death of infants in Mexico. They used SIDs to make a bracelet for babies to detect their healthy problems, and the datas of infants’ health will be sent to parents by the bracelet to reduce the death rate of infants. They made an app to receive the datas by bluetooth for parents.

Their customer will be parents and hospitals.

 

Sharesol

Sharesol wants to build a sharing system of umbrellas to reduce the wastage of umbrellas in Japan because lots of umbrellas in good condition are threw away after one rainy day, so they use the tradition feature of Japan——kumiko to build the pavilion to store umbrellas. The advertisement on the side of pavilion will be the main way of income.

 

Delibox

Delibox noticed that the housing prices in China are very expensive, so they get their slogan, Store for delicacy of life. They imitated the process of their product and showed to audiences, and they explained online reservation and warehouse arrangement, but the committee mentioned that the difference between HongKong and Shanghai that is caused by areas will have a better innovation than their plan.




2017 Thu-Santander 21Century World Challenges
2017 Tsinghua-Santander World Challenges of 21st Century Program was successfully closed on 11 August. After 2 weeks workshop, the finalists found new ideas and inspirations for their own projects.
