In the afternoon of April 15, President Qiu Yong, as the only representative of colleges, briefed Vice Premier Liu Yandong on the innovation and entrepreneurship education of Tsinghua University. In his Speech, President Qiu proposed four concepts, and made the initiative of an innovation and entrepreneurship education union among Chinese universities. The speech won wide praise of participants. President Qiu pointed out that education’s role in supporting innovation and entrepreneurship specifically contains four points:
First, entrepreneurship is a long process and entrepreneurial talent also needs long-term training. To cultivate entrepreneurial talent, education should come first. University education should focus on guiding students to strengthen the sense of innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and creative ability to form a good atmosphere for innovation and entrepreneurship. In 1998, Tsinghua University held the first Entrepreneurship Competition; in 1999, the Central Committee of the Communist Young League promoted the Entrepreneurship Competition to the national level, and in the same year, Tsinghua University allowed students to suspend schooling for Entrepreneurship. Tong Zhilei, the gold medal winner of the first National College Students Entrepreneurship Competition, founded the "Chinese Online", while Zhou Yahui who is among the first students that suspend schooling for entrepreneurship founded "Kunlun Wanwei". On January 21, their businesses succeeded listing in the GEM of Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
Second, the success of entrepreneurship depends on the overall quality of its members, and education that brings knowledge and innovation together is of great importance. Entrepreneurship can be good or bad, and innovative entrepreneurship is among the best and most encouraged. Only by a comprehensive, scientific and systematic innovation education can we enhance the overall quality of students to cultivate high-level entrepreneurial talent. To this end, Tsinghua has been vigorously exploring a “three in one” education model of value shaping, capacity building and knowledge teaching. By promoting high-level entrepreneurship education integrated by creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, students’ entrepreneurial spirits can be sparkled. We have established the “Certificate Program on innovation capacity" and other platforms like “Interest Team” which focuses on creativity, “Makerspace” which focuses on innovation and “X-Lab" which is for entrepreneurship. Each year, more than 1,700 people participate in "Makerspace", among which 90% are undergraduates.
Third, we should foster entrepreneurial talent in an open environment. Tsinghua University highlights openness at large and has been making efforts to create a sustainable and diversified innovation and entrepreneurship educational platform. Mickey Altman, the father of maker spaces, and a number of international top creative talents are invited as our guest makers. We have set up" face to face with entrepreneurs" course where more than 20 entrepreneurs share their entrepreneurial experience with students. X-lab has employed more than 20 guest entrepreneurs and more than 30 in-school investors as business mentors. We have also established docking cooperation with more than 150 investment institutions and more than 100 professional service agencies to support the entrepreneurship in an all-round manner. The ZEE GINE company set up by an undergraduate Wang Shidong of grade 2007 got Beijing's first business license since the promulgation of the new Company Law. The sales of 3D printers of ZEE GINE are among the top three at Taobao.
Fourth, entrepreneurship is a social engineering and entrepreneurship education should be open to the whole society. Entrepreneurship not only relates to college students, but guides them to actively take social responsibility to provide quality educational resources for the "public entrepreneurship".
Since the beginning of 2013, Tsinghua University has organized a series of activities such as Global Marathon for Makers and Sino-US Young Maker Competition. This year, Tsinghua University will also co-host the launching ceremony of US-China Young Maker Competition in Pittsburgh.
Tsinghua actively promotes entrepreneurship education with contemporary educational technology. Since "school online", the large-scale online education platform was opened over a year ago, it has published nearly 400 courses from home and abroad, with the total number of subscribers exceeding 1.3 million. On March 24, this year, the platform opened a new channel named "China entrepreneurship College" and has launched a series of online courses. So far, there are two classes launched with the number of subscribers exceeding 20,000 people, among which 91% are outside the university. More than 20 online entrepreneurship courses will be launched soon this year.
Recently, after communicating with leaders of the Ministry of Education, Tsinghua University issued an initiative to establish the Union of Chinese University on Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education. Through this platform, we will work closely with our brother universities, enterprises and institutions to lead China's innovation and entrepreneurship Education, cultivate more talent of innovation and entrepreneurship and contribute to implementing the innovation-driven strategy and building an innovation-oriented country.
