This course is the result of cooperation between the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University and the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences of Stanford University. During the autumn semester, Fu Zhiyong, from Tsinghua Academy of Arts& Design, and Deland Chan and Kevin Hsu from Stanford University, collaborated on an international course delivered through remote communication.
20 graduate students of Tsinghua, 10 graduate and 10 undergraduate students of Stanford took the course. Students were divided into five groups, each consisting of students from Tsinghua and Stanford of different majors. Revolving around Urban Sustainability, the course is organized into five tracks: electric vehicles, bicycle culture, land use, cultural protection and food systems. The curriculum integrates the concept of social and experiential learning, explores the problems in the process of urban development in the context of globalization and intercultural communication. By means of project research, field research and hands-on practice, Tsinghua students actively applied design thinking and service design concepts to their practice and excellently completed the design issues, concept development, prototype, display posters, video production and so on.
After a 10-week remote cooperation, Fu Zhiyong, along with four graduate students of the Department of Information and Art Design, visited Stanford University from December 1-7, 2014. Fu conducted a one-week face-to-face exchange with the Stanford participants and joined hands with Stanford d.School to organize a joint publication of student homework and the exhibition works.
Students’ capacity of cross-cultural inquiry and problem solving has won praise from the teachers. Stanford's presentation also invited 10 American experts in the field of urban sustainability and social innovation to share the new project Lightning Chat and hold seminars.
